FINE ARTS

 

 

Art  GRADE 9  (ARHR1G)

 

Credit: .5

 

 

Four to five units are covered including drawing, painting, ceramics and design including an integrated art history component.  Evaluation is based on completion of all work, technical ability and originality.  Attendance is very important in order to attain the half credit.

 

 

 Art GRADE 10, GRADE 11 & GRADE 12  (ARTR2G), (ARTR3S), (ARTR4S)

 

 

All units are taught in a sequential manner and begin with exercises introducing the student to the techniques and concepts behind the assignment.  Units may include:  drawing, painting (acrylic and watercolour), ceramics (pottery and sculpture), sculpture (various media) and design.  Art history is brought in as it relates in every unit.  Students visit an art gallery at least once a semester.

 

 

Sketchbook

 

 

PROCESS (the steps and thoughts used to develop a final piece) is extremely important.  Therefore, a sketchbook in which all written and preparatory work will be done is mandatory for every assignment.  It is worth 40 % of the final grade.

Art  GRADE 10

 

 

The Art program for GRADE 10 is a transition year in which students are continuing to explore a variety of media and are also beginning to develop their own projects and “voice”.  Sketchbooks are introduced and are an integral component of this year’s evaluation.

 

 

Art GRADE 11 and GRADE 12

 

 

At the GRADE 11 and GRADE 12 level students will be given a combination of mandatory exercises and sketchbook requirements in addition to an emphasis on exploration and self-initiated projects. 

 

A written assessment of every assignment will be given along with an oral explanation of the mark.

 

 

Choir Grade 10,11,12  (CHOR1G), (CHOR2G), (CHOR3S), (CHOR4S)

 

 

The Senior Choir is open to all students from GRADE 9 to GRADE 12.  In the programme students will be taught the principles of choral singing and the fundamentals necessary for reading music.  The course is a study of choral repertoire from a wide selection of periods and styles of music.  As performance plays a very important in the programme, students are expected to attend at all times.  Assessment is based upon vocal testing, self-evaluation and attendance.

 

 

Drama GRADE 9  (DAHY1G)

 

 

This course provides an introduction to Dramatic Arts through a variety of dramatic art forms and activities.  These exercises and activities are designed to develop acting skills and prepare students for performance.  Students will experience a variety of techniques including sensory awareness, relaxation, and concentration.  Forms such a tableau, mime, and improvisation will be studied.  Theatre and recreational games will e explored for skill development.  Emphasis will be placed on voice and scene work.

 

 

Drama Grades 9,10,11,12  (DMAR2G), (DMAR3S), (DMAR4S)

 

Credit: 1

 

 

Through the use of mime, improvisation, playscripts, readers theatre, music and the academic study of the history of the theatre, we prepare the students for the knowledge of and experience in, Dramatic Arts, Classes take place at 8:00 a.m.  The work will include some technical aspects of production and the taking of presentations “on the road” to other schools.

 

 

 

 Keyboard Grades 10,11,12  (MUKY2G), (MUKY3G), (MUKY4G)

 

Credit: 1

 

 

An introduction to piano skills by way of class and/or individual instruction.  Students will progress at their own speed and will be exposed to many different kinds of playing styles and repertoires.  Class size is limited.  Evaluation is based on skill, musicianship, theory, performance and participation.

Vocal Jazz Grades 9,10,11,12   (VOJR1G), (VOJR2G), (VOJR3S), (VOJR4S)

 

 

This class is open to students by audition only and students accepted must also be in Choral Grade 9,10,11,12.  Students in the Vocal Jazz Choir will explore and practice the different techniques required for performing the large quantity of vocal jazz repertoire that they will learn.  Most of the music studied will be in jazz style although other contemporary music forms will be performed as well.  This group is very performance oriented and requires much dedication from the student members.  Assessment is based vocal testing, self evaluation and attendance
